Five years ago the popular Songs Of Praise programme conducted their first ever online vote to discover the nation’s most popular carols. Over twenty five thousand viewers chose their favourites. The top ten results at the time, listed in alphabetical order are below:-

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

In The Bleak Midwinter

It Came Upon A Midnight Clear

Joy To The World

O Come All Ye Faithful

O Come, O Come Emmanuel

O Holy Night

O Little Town of Bethlehem

Once In Royal David’s City

Silent Night

Isn’t it wonderful that these most loved and well known carols are still been sung all around the world in worship and adoration to King Jesus. In many school assemblies, nativity plays, watchnight and Sunday services we raise our worship. They aren’t just songs, they are praises that capture the heart of worship as our focus is on Jesus and the miracle of His birth.

There are of course many new wonderful songs of worship penned over the years, but there is still something so very poignant and pure in these Christmas Hymns. Singing them in old folks homes, hospitals, or in a busy shopping mall - you can see the reaction on many faces  recalling their own Christmas memories - family, church, or God memories.

May the Spirit of God breathe afresh over every person who hears, hums along to, or finds themselves singing these Christmas carols over these next few days until Christmas day.

May we also find our own hearts come alive as we sing. Not mindlessly repeating from memory, not going through the motions as we are exhausted, but may we be utterly rejuvenated as the Holy Spirit glorifies The Son of God, our beautiful Saviour to us.

May fresh encounter with the living Christ be our testimony as we gather over this land, singing with the angels our love and adoration in lavish abandonment to our King this Christmas. All together - “O Come, let us adore Him…..”

O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

We’ll give him all the glory,
We’ll give him all the glory,
We’ll give him all the glory,
Christ the Lord.

For he alone is worthy,
For he alone is worthy,
For he alone is worthy,
Christ the Lord.

We’ll praise His name forever,

We’ll praise His name forever,

We’ll praise His name forever,

Christ the Lord.
